The head of Lake Wakatipu, some 46km north of Queenstown, with its tiny settlement of Glenorchy has one of the most beautiful and attractive sceneries of the Wakatipu Basin, familiarly called "The Wakatip". Anyone who desires to escape from the bustle of nearby Queenstown or simply needs to take a deep breath, has the perfect opportunity to find there tranquility and harmony within a well-balanced open valley.
Generally, Glenorchy is considered a gate to Mt Aspiring National Park, annually challenging a high number tourists and trampers to explore such reputable tracks and walks as Routeburn, Dart-Rees, Greenstone or Caples. Nevertheless, there are many others that are maybe less known but definitely no less beautiful - all of them telling their own stories of the past...

SPONSORED-TRAP STOAT-BUSTERS PROGRAM
Mountainland
Rovers is aiming to increase an already very successful Stoat Trapping
Program.
"As a tourist operator we consider one of our biggest
investments is taking initiatives to protect our pristine natural
environment." Dick Watson.
Through seeking corporate sponsorship of
traps Dick's Eco-Tourism based business-Mountainland Rovers- plan to significantly increase the number of traps,
blanket-trapping the entire area at the head of the Lake in order to
give a bigger buffer zone for these birds. It is estimated at
least 350 traps will be required at a cost of $225 per trap. The
program is supported by Department of Conservation and LIP's (Locally
Initiated Programs) In the last three years Mountainland
Rovers has taken over 240 stoats, 39 Rats, 3 Ferrets and 3 Feral Cats
from the Rees Valley at the head of Lake Wakatipu. As a result,
the survival rate of various bird chicks that live in this basin has
greatly increased . You will be aware that stoats are widely
regarded as a significant predator of a number of New Zealand’s most
threatened and endangered native bird species.

Sunday, 05 August 2007
From
Glenorchy comes the latest offering in family reward systems. These
simple, time saving references develop confidence in parents and
children and have the support of Lynette Cherrington-Peat, Early
Childhood Coordinator, Ministry of Education. Having used the tool, she
says; “Excellent concept, excellent colorful friendly characters,
excellent artwork. Overall the resource is instantly providing training
for children to grow up as competent and confident learners and
communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense
of belonging and in the knowledge they make a valued contribution
to society”.Glenorchy, Otago, ‘stay at home mum’, Glyn Barry devised
the two tools. Karlin Frew, Glyn’s business partner emphasizes that,
‘both tools promote family quality time’. The Enchanted Child
tool provides an easy and fun avenue for encouraging good behavior,
combining a fantasy land including a castle, fairies and pixies with the
joy of small rewards for good behavior. As one Mum has already said ‘
They (my children) are more independent as a result of using the reward
system, making my time with them real quality 'mum' time - more
time for hugs and cuddles!”
The Potty Training Tool is an effective reward system to help toddlers
and caregivers overcome the intimidating task of toilet training. The
unique ‘Peel and Reveal’ sticker chart is designed to encourage and
excite children about their accomplishment on the potty.
